Join or Die

Technically, the Order still has a “Join or Die” doctrine regarding non-Hermetic wizards. As a result, after more than a century of Order involvement in the New World, there are a significant number of native american members of the Order, mostly in House Ex Miscellanea, House Bjornaer, or House Merenita. There is a strong Hermetic lineage of Iroqois magi in House Bonisagus, and a Creek lineage in House Tytalus.

In the western expansion, however, the doctrine is paid more lip service than usual. Native wizards aren’t given so much of an opportunity to join before they’re simply killed for their magical resources. As with all things, the situation is fluid. There is a strong movement among many magi to take a more conciliatory approach to the native magic-users. Politically, this movement is mostly spearheaded by House Criamon and House Ex Miscellanea. Unsurprisingly, magi of House Tytalus and Flambeau prefer to simply take what they want over the smoking corpses of their rivals.

In either case, the magical resources of the north American continent are presumed, vis a vis Manifest Destiny, to belong to the Order of Hermes, and whichever magus finds an unclaimed source is free to claim it and register their claim with the nearest Quaesitor.
